My town

Today I am going to tell you a little about
my town of Sturgis, South Dakota USA.
It is a town of about 7,000 people located
in the north east corner of the Black Hills
of South Dakota. It is on Interstate 90
about 30 miles from the Wyoming
border and 27 miles from Rapid City.
Sturgis has one world wide distinguishing
feature. It is the home to the world's
largest motor cycle rally. Every year,
toward the end of July, motorcycles
begin merging on Sturgis from all points
on the compass. The official rally starts
around the first part of August and lasts
for one week but unofficially it runs for
more than a month. Each year anywhere
from 450,000 to 700,000 bikers show
up for the event. They not only take
over the town. They take over the
entire Black Hills and the surrounding
area.
My wife and I leave town during one
week of this event. We can't stand the
tremendous noise.
On bad fall out of Sturgis sponsoring
this event is shopping in Sturgis.
Almost the entire main street running
three blocks long has been bought out
by merchandisers who open their
business doors for about one month
each year. Some rent out their buildings
to local businesses the remainder of
the year but what with moving in and
moving out, these businesses are only
able to offer products or services to the
public for about ten months of the year.
About half the business buildings remain
shut and empty for all but the few weeks
they are open for the rally.
Sturgis can be called a religious town;
for it's relative small size, it can boast
27 churches, but of course, it has it's
share of bars also.
Although Sturgis is, in effect, a bedroom
town, for ten months of the year it is
a great town to live in. We have
wonderful medical care within the
city limits, a VA hospital wih a very
good reputation just outside the city
limits and within 30 miles of some of
the best medical care in the country.
Being on the edge of the Black Hills,
it is only 55 miles to Mt. Rushmore,
70 miles to the Crazy Horse monument;
about 80 miles to the Badlands of
South Dakota.
The Black Hills are covered with
hiking trails, cross country ski
trails, hundreds of miles of
groomed snowmobile trails;
excellent hunting of deer, antelope,
elk, pheasants and waterfowl.
It also has some excellent fishing;
rainbow, brown and brook trout,
bass, walleyes, northern pike,
crappies, sunfish and bullheads.
It has two downhill skii resorts.
Deadwood is only 12 miles from
Sturgis and offers exellent
gambling, eating and lodging
facilities.
Doesn't all this make you want to
move to Sturgis? My wife and I
have lived here for the past 28 years.
We love living here most of the year.

Another incorrect English language useage

Here is an example of the type of mistake
many people use: "Jim and me went to
town". 'Jim and the personal pronoun
me'are both the subject of the sentence.
'me' is never used as a subject. The
correct pronoun to use in this case is 'I'.

Don't believe everything you read or hear

Case in point:
I am continually hearing reporters,
anchor people and editorial writers
tell us President Bush announced
"Mission Accomplished" and, as
proof, mention the large banner hung
on the superstructure of the aircraft
carrier Abraham Lincoln. He had
flown onto the deck of the carrier. A
podium and microphones had been
set up for him. During his speech,
he mentioned major combat had come
to an end. Anyone who knows anythng
about combat knows what we have
been seeing in Iraq since then does not
constitute major combat. Consider,
our losses due to combat in Iraq to
the present day amount to a few more
than 3,100.
We had taken on the fifth largest
military force in th world and forced
that military force into surrendering.
There were several battles in World
War II in which we lost many more
people than that; one battle in which
we lost more in one day of fighting.
Photographers shooting President
Bush giving his speech, aligned their
camera off to one side so both the
President and the bannner showed
up in their photos. Was this an accident
or did they purposely try to include both
the president and the banner in their shot?
And for what purpose?

Most liberals have tried to convince
us President Bush had that banner
produced and hung there to proclaim
"Mission Accomplished".
I don't know whether the liberal
reporters, liberal politicians and
liberal editoral writers have been
purposely lying to us or if they were
all just too lazy and unprofessional to
check out the story.
Facts:
Three years ago this coming January,
Fox News had the captain of the
Abraham Lincoln on one of their
news shows. He was asked about the
banner. Here is what he said:
"I had that banner made and hung
there as my way of congratulating
my ship and her crew for having
successfully accomplished their
mission". In just about every speech
President Bush has made since then
he has stated the fight against terrorists
in Iraq will be a long and hard one but
we must stay the course and win this
fight.

If we can't believe all these liberals
on a simple story like that, how can
anyone believe anything they tell us?

My Autobiography

In yesterday's blog, I told you a little about my three book length
fiction novels, especially my first one.
Today I am going to talk a little about my 550 page
autobiography. I have it completed and edited up to
the present day. Before I attempt to publish it I will
be adding more to it as my life progresses.
My life has not been your usual sort of ho hum kind of
life. In the first place, I was the first baby of a set of
twins born in the nearly new hospital in Valentine,
Nebraska. I was raised on the Rosebud Indian
Reservation in south central South Dakota.
My folks owned and operated a medium sized
farm/ranch; in other words, highly diversified.
I went to a one room school house a mile and a half
from where we lived. No, we were not bused to the
school. My dad drove us to school one day during
my eight years in grade school. On that day it was
blizzarding. He also came and got us that day, but
with a team of horses and a wagon.
I could say, we seldom walked to school. No, we
usually ran all the way. This was not because we
got out of bed late. No, it was because we had
so many chores to do before we could eat
breakfast and then leave for school.
I went to high school in a 3 classroom and study
hall wooden structure in Mission, South Dakota.
my first three years.
This town is 31 miles from where we lived so one
of our dads drove my two sisters and me, as well as
a couple of neighbor boys, to Mission on Monday
morning and came after us on Friday afternoons.
During my first two years I stayed in a private
home. My junior year I, with two other boys,
stayed in a tiny two room cabin and we batched; which
means we did our own cooking and house keeping.
My senior year I stayed in the new Quenset Hut
dormitory and ate in the new Quenset Hut
dining room. We attended school in a brand new
Quanset hut school building, with running water,
indoor toilets and a library. We thought we were
really living it up. Of course, in my autobiography, I do not condense
my first eighteen years down to these few paragraphs.
The rest of my life story, and the people I met and
knew, is even more unusual than those early years.
Some day, in the near future, I hope to get the
autobiolgrapy published and available on the internet.

Teaser about my first novel

I started writing my first novel back in 1984, right after I'd had cardiac five by-pass surgery. A few days after my
surgery, I was talking with a fellow heart by-pass
patient. He asked me what I was going to do after I got
back home. I told him I had been thinking about
writing a novel. He issued me a challenge. He said
"don't just think about it. Do it!" I later thought
about what he said and decided to do just that.
I stopped at a Sears store and bought an electronic
typewriter. When I got back home with it, I set it
up on a typewriter desk in front of our sliding glass door overlooking the town of Sturgis.
The next morning, about 7 o'clock, I sat down at the typerwriter a couple of minutes, then began typing. I never stopped until lunch time. After lunch I started up again and didn't stop until my wife arrived home from work about five thirty.
For the next several weeks this is what I did five or six days a week. The story just seemed to unfold, without any effort or much thinking on my part. It was there and had to come out. I felt like I was just a tool for the story, my purpose of being there was to do the typing.
When I had the rough draft finished, it was about 425 pages long.
After writing two more novels, both also about 425 pages each, on my electronic typewriter, I decided it was time to buy a computer and use a word processor to rewrite the three novels.
I was in a big hurry, new to computers and had great faith in them. I rushed through all three, saving them only to my own computer. I knew about saving to a floopy disc but was in a rush to get them rewitten so didn't take the time to do so. I was almost finished rewriting my third novel when my computer crashed. I took it to two experts but neither were able to salvage anything.
I was so downhearted and discourage, I put the novels aside and didn't get back to them for years. I finally rewrote the first two on a new computer, saving them to floppy discs, this time. That was as far as I got with any of the three novels until recently when I started editing and rewriting my first book. I am close to being ready to try and find a publisher. I have given serious thought to
using a Publish It Yourself company. I have found one which seems to offer everything I was considering, including printing the book on both paper back and hard bound, and setting the novel to sell on the internet as an eBook. The company I am considering is AuthorHouse. I did a search to see what kind of negative comments were made by some of their customers. Only five were listed; three were highly negative, one only mildly so and one just a little negative. Two of the three highly negative were Britishers. I don't know if that is meaningful or not. It may be they just didn't know how to deal with an American publishing company. Also all the comments were two or three years old. It may be the problems they ran into have been corrected by no. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has had experience with this company.
The title of my first book is: The Enemy is Our Neighbor. Later on I will offer tidbits about what the story is about.

Watching TV news

Today I am going to talk about what to look for
when watching the news on TV so you won't be
influenced without your realizing you are being
manipulated.
A news caster or TV anchor person can use
facial expressions and body motions to get you
to think the way he or she wants you to think,
again without you realizing your subconsious
mind is being influenced. He or she may put
on a very happy face if that is the type of
response is wanted from you. He or she may
frown as they are reporting a certain story.
That is supposed to make you think negatively
about the subject of the story. Watch their
hands and posture while reporting a particular
news story. Don't let either influence your
thinking on the subject being reported.
