Another news watching tip

Today's tip on reading the news.
Some news publications use
location of a particular news
story to influence whether
you even read the story.
A case in point.
In the 1998 senate race in
South Dakota between
incubent Larry Pressler and
Tim Johnson, it was a very
close race right up to
election time.
Senator Larry Pressler
was chairman of the
committe which pertained
to the communication industry.
He had just succssfully
led an extremely important
bill on communication
through the senate.
On the Saturday before
the elections, the Rapid
City Journal carried a story
on this accomplishment.
Even thouht it was an
important accomplishment
on the part of Senator
Pressler which affected all
of us, the story was carried
on page 13 in the complete
bottom right hand corner of
the newspaper. It was a
very short story, one column
about three inches long.
Both the Headline and the
story were printed in very
light grey, hardly noticeable.
Certainly most readers
would take one look at it
and consider it too
unimportant to read.
Such a story, printed on
the front page or page
three, all in very black
print and taking up
half a page, might have
made the difference in
how the election came
out. No where in the
headline or story did it
mention he was a
Republican.
Contrast this treatment of
Senator Larry Pressler with
him opponent, Tim Johnson.
Tim Johnson was our
congressman at the time.
On page three, the entire
upper half of the page was
taken up with a story about
him, filled with unimportant
information which was written
up in such a way as to glorify
him and his supposed
accomplishments.
The headling was hugh and
printed in the blackest of black
print and ran the full length
of the page. The sub heading
and news story about him filled
up the rest of the upper half of
page three and both were again
printed in the blackest color
possible. The fact that he was
a Democrat was mentioned in
the headline, the sub heading
and several times in the story.
Needless to say, Tim Johnson
won the election by a very
narrow margin.
Believe it or not, the Rapid
City Journal was rated by a
liberal organization as a
news paper which was a
backer of conservatives and
conservative causes. Anyone
who has been a Rapid City
Journal reader must get a
big chuckle out of that bit
of news.

Health Hint

Today I am going to switch directions and offer a health hint.
For years I had been bothered by joint pain in my wrists, back,
hips and knees. Two years ago I started taking Glucosomine
witn Chondroitin and MSM. The latter two ingredients are
for the purpose of making it easier for your body to absorb
the Glucosomine.
A Year ago I mentioned to my doctor I was taking the
supplement and felt it was helping me. He said he was
a firm believer in Glucosomine and advised to double
the dosage I was taking. I followed his advise. Today I
am almost totally pain free. If you buy this supplement
combination at swansonsvitamins.com or Purtan, it is
quite inexpensive, only a few cents a day.
My wife started taking Glucosomine last winter and
today she is also almost pain free. Neither of us have
ever experienced any side affects from taking the
supplement.

Another news watching lesson

Today's lesson on how to interpret the news.
On political stories, take note of how many
times a party affiliation is listed. If it is a
negative story about one party or member
of that party, you will find his or her party
mentioned in the headlines, sub heading,
first paragraph, somewhere in the body of
the story and in the final paragraph.
If the negative story is about the other main party
or someone in that party, if there is any
mention at all of party affiliation it will
be in the final paragraph. Just the opposite
is true in a positive story. Were you aware
the vast majority of news readers never
read beyond the first couple of paragraphs?

A Personal story

This is a little story about something which happened to me this last Friday.
My wife and I went to a polka fest at the 4Aces Casino in Deadwood, South Dakota.

As we were driving to Deadwood, I mentioned to my wife I was going to leave my eye glasses in the car as they were drving me nuts. As we were walking into the casino I realized I was still wearing them. After we found seats, I put the glasses in my shirt pocket. Over the next half hour we danced a number of fast walzes and polkas. As we were leaving the floor after one set, I subconciously felt my shirt pocket and suddenly realized my glasses were no longer there. My wife and I searched the dance floor but did not see them anywhere. We went back to where we had been sitting and we began looking on the floor and around my chair, hoping we'd find them there. About a half dozen people became interested in what we were looking for. One of them asked, and when I told her I was looking for my glasses which had fallen out of my shirt pocket, she and four or five others began helping us look. After perhaps a minute, one of the women looked at me and exclaimed "you're wearing them. They are on your face". I felt the upper part of my face and sure enough, there were my glasses. We all had great laugh. Since they had been bothering me so much earlier, I don't know how I could have put them back on and not even noticed I had them on. I also wondered how a half dozen people could look at me and not see them. Anyway, I think the best kind of joke is one a person tells on themselves.

More grammar

This is another case of people using the wrong personal pronoun. Case in point: "She is older than me". A portion of this statement is not shown but is understood to be a part of the statement. The full statement would read "she is older than I am old". Since "I am old" is awkward, it is simply understood to be there. Hence, the statement should read "she is older than I". **End of today's english lesson**

Merle's thoughts

Off and on I am going to make comments about how some people slaughter the English language.
Today I am going to talk about the personal pronoun to use as the object of preposition 'to'.
How often have you heard someone, even a college graduate or someone who makes their living with words, say something like "he gave Tom and I a new telephone".
One way to test to see if that is proper useage is to drop off the other person and see if it sounds right. Example:
"he gave I a new telephone". It is easy to see that is not correct. Hint:the preposition 'to' is not seen but is assumed to be there; example: he gave 'to' Tom and me a new telephone. By assuming the 'to' is there, the correct way to say it is "he gave Tom and me a new telephone". **End of English lesson**
