First let me urge you to scroll

Many of my postings are in
sequence and will have much

Today I would like to say a
few words about autobiographies.
I just fininshed edititing the
final version of my own
autobiography. About ten
different people have asked
me if they could read it so
I have been giving it to them,
a segment at a time. I am
emailing it to most of them.
The comments I am getting
back from them are very
encouraging.
Each has made almost the
identical comment. As one
author put it, "Merle" she
said. "A good indication as
to whether or not a writing
is good is whether or not a
person has a problem putting
it down. Both my husband
and I have trouble putting
your autobiography down."
Can an auther get a higher
praise than that?

I want to say I think most people
have lived lives which others
would find interesting. I think
a lot more poeple should write
their biographies. It is one way
leaving tracks when you pass on.

The Town of Hot Springs, South Dakota

Now, about the town of Hot Springs.

It is a community of more than 4000

people. It has a beautiful little

river running through the middle

of the town.

There is a Vetern's Hospital as

well as an Old Soldier's Home

located within the city limits.

Being located in a valley, surrounded

by high hills, the town has a great deal

of charm.

There is a commercial Hot Springs

enclosed swimming pool which

attracts tourist by the 1000's. The

naturally hot water is very soothing

to one's aches and pains. In fact,

back around the turn of the century,

many people came to swim in the pool

for that very reason.

Hot Springs has a wonderful old three

story school house which has been

turned into a museum.

With many charming hotels, motels,

cafes and restrauants, it offers much to

offer to tourists.

With a large irrigation district and many

large ranches located close by, Hot Springs's

businesses offer most of what the local

people, business people, farmers and ranchers

need. Rapid City is the closest competitive

shopping area and it is 75 miles to the

north.

The hamlet of Pringle, Black Hills of South Dakota

Today I am going to say a few
words about the little village of
Pringle. It is located a dozen or
more miles south of Custer.

It is a very small village with
a population too small to have
a population listed on South
Dakota road maps.

Pringle was a timber and
mining community originally.
It has very little in the way of
businesses or industry and
it primarily a bedroom
settlement.

Why am I writing about it?
Because it exists.

Custer, Black Hills town

Today's posting is about the town of Custer, South Dakota.
Custer is a delightful tourist town located on highways 385 and highway 16, south west of Mt. Rushmore and south of the Crazy Horse Monument.

It has a population of nearly
2000 people. The town was
one of the first towns in the
Black Hills. It was here Custer
and his troops and scientists
were camped when one of his
geologists discovered gold.
This news was released to the
nation, causing a stampede
of people, mainly men,
rushing to the Custer area in
search of gold.

Custer is well well attuned to
needs and ways of the typical
tourist. It has many fine
motels, restrauants and cafes
as well as some great
entertainment.

Wrap up of Pearl Harbor Attack

To make sense of my six postings about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, I urge you to scroll down to daily Blog Archives and start with the December 3rd posting.

As you have no doubt deduced, I feel there is very strong evidence from a great many sources which indicate President Roosevelt and his top civilain and military people knew in advance of the pending Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

True, we lost more than 2,200
people in the attack, mostly
military. Also true we
permently lost one battleship,
one destroyer, and seven
battleships were knocked out of
action for a one to two year
period.

Despite these tragic losses, there
were very plus consequences for
allowing the attack to take it's
tragic toll. First of all, the
public opinion of the people of
the United States did a complete
about face. By an overwhelming
majority, they supported the
Roosevelt administration in
carrying out an all out war effort.

Second, they were successfu in
getting Germany and Italy to
declare war against us. This
relieved the United States from
having to make the first overt
move.

Third, we were now completely
free to help both the British and
the Soviet Union in waging war
against the axis nations as well
as China. This timely help did,
without any doubt in my mind,
save all three countries from
being defeated by the axis
countries.

The ultimate plust was we, along
with other countries of the free
world, were able to defeat all
three axis countries.

So maybe, probably, it is safe to
say the actions the Roosevelt
administration took to insure the
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
woud be a disaster for the United
States was completely justified.

I sometimes wonder if they couldn't
have given orders for some of our
more modern battleships to return
to the west coast for modifications.
If four of these had been saved and
been available for immediate use,
perhaps we would not have gone
through more seven months of
almost constant defeat before being
able to turn around the steady
march of Japanese forces across the
Pacific.

But then, to have done so, might have
raised suspicians in the minds of the
American people the Roosevelt top
people knew in advance about the
pending attack. With that kind of
thinking, it may have been much
harder to rally the country into an
all out effort for revenge.

December 7, 1941,Pearl Harbor Day

In order to make sense of these posts dealing with the December 7th, 1941
attack on Pearl Harbor and Hickam Field, I urge you to scroll down until

Today is the 66th anniversary of the
so called sneak attack on Pearl Harbor
by Japanese naval aircraft.

That morning was Sunday morning. Life
on the Pearl Harbor naval base and at
Hckam Field had gone on as usual.
No one appeared to have given a thought
there was a possibility of any attack by
Japanese forces. This was not by accident.
Washington had done everything possible
to get the military people in a relaxed mood.
The only two things they had been warned
about was the possibility of sabotage of
military aircraft parked at Hickam Field.
This threat had been taken care of by
parking the aircraft close together to make it easier to protect them.

A radar station located near Pearl Harbor
was on duty that morning. Shortly before
eight o'clock they called their reporting
station to report a large number of what
appeared to be aircraft, approaching the
island. A young lieutenant, his first day
on this particular job, took the call. He
had been informed about the incoming
squadron of B17's expected at that very
time, from the states. He told the radar
crew not worry about their radar sighting,
that it was just a flight of B-a7's. He then
told them, as he had been instructed, they
could close up their radar station and go
off duty, which they did. The aircraft
were not Amercan B-17's. They were,
in fact, Japanese naval aircraft on their
way to torpedo and bomb US battleships
and airplanes.

A half hour earlier, a destroyer escort
reported sighting a Japanese sub near
the entrance to the inlet to Pearl Harbor
and had made a depth charge run on it.
This report did not reach higher authorities until several hours after the attack from the air.

A few minutes before 8 that morning the attack
began. Part of the Japanese air fleet attacked
Hickam Field and succeeded in destroying
almost the entire 200 plus aircraft parked
closely side by side across the field.

The battleships at anchor in the harbor were
the main targets of the rest of the Japanese
air fleet. The Arizona was sunk, never to rise
again. All of the other seven battleships were
hit by bombs and torpedoes. Some were sunk,only to be raised and put back into action later. Some were just badly damaged. One, the Nevada, was able to get underway and almost made it out of the harbor, but thenwas ordered to beach itself to keep from getting sunk and blocking the harbor entrance. It, and all the other remaining ships, except the Arizona, were back in action
within one to two years. Several played a key
role in the battle of the Philipines, helping to
destroy almost an entire Japanese fleet.

More than 2200 naval and army air corp
personel were killed during the attack the
attack on Pearl Harbor.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was touted as an
unprovoked sneak attack by the dastardly
Japanese. The American public bought this
slant and turned their frustration and anger
against the Japanese empire and the Japanese
people.

One December 8, 1941, President Roosevelt
urged congress to declare war against Japan,
which they did, with one opposing vote.
Two days later Germany, and then Italy,
declared war against the United States.
President Roosevelt had been successful in
his endeavor to get Germany to declare war
against us.

I don't expect you to take my word on this
chain of events. I only hope I have stirred
your curiosity enough for you to do some
research on your own.

Part IV, Two Days Prior to Attack on Pearl Harbor

To understand the sequence of events which took place leading up to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, I urge you to scroll down to daily "Blog

3 posting, then the 4th and then
today's posting on the 5th.

In order for a Japanese attack to be serious enough to turn around public opinion against our entering the war raging around the world, it was necessary for it to be very successful.


The Roosevelt top people took
a number of measures to insure this. They seemed certain the attack would be against our bases in Hawaii.

The first measure was to get our two
aircraft carriers out of Hawaiian waters.
We couldn't afford to lose these in any
sneak attack.

One was ordered back to the west coast
for some refitting. The other carrier was ordered to deliver fighter aircraft
to Midway. Neither of these missions was
essential at this particular time. In fact,
with an attack by Japan almost a
certainty, it would have made far more
sense for them to be cruising in the
waters of Hawaii to provide air protection
to the air and naval bases on Oahu,
Hawaii.

A second measure was an order from
Washington for a squadron of B-17
bombers to take off from the west coast
at a given time on the night of December
6th. They were ordered to take a route
which would bring them in from the
north side of the island of Oahu at
around eight o'clock Ohau time on the morning of December 7. This timing
was to be very important for the
success of the Japanese surpise
attack.

These two orders were mighty peculiar
considering the circumstances but they
were not the only unusual orders issued
to the military brass from Washington.
Both the navy and air corp on Oahu
were ordered to cease all patrols to the
north and northwest of Oahu and
concentrate their surveillance to the
west and south west. One look at a map
of the Pacific would strongly suggest
any Japanese fleet coming from Japan
to attack military bases on Oahu would
approach from the north west. As a result
of this order, there were no US ships nor
airplanes patrolling that part of the
Pacific.

A couple of days before December 7th,
Washington sent word to the top brass
in Hawaii the Japanese fleet was sailing
south and was expected to attack the
Philippines. Therefore, the Hawaiian Islands were in no danger of attack by the
Japanese fleet. However, they were warned
to be on the watch for Japanese submarines
which had been spotted in the area. Perhaps
because of this warning of Japanese
submarines, the Admiral of the Pacific fleet
kept his capitol ships, the eight battleships
and numerous cruisers, anchored closely
together in Pearl Harbor. One of the
battleships was in drydock.

Now this was also very curious. The top
people in Washington knew the exact day
and time the Japanese fleet set sail. They
knew the speed the fleet would be traveling.
Even a rank amateur could figure out from
the time of the fleet setting sail to December
5th, they would have had time to reach the
Indian Ocean. They would have arrived for
an attack on the Philippines several days
earlier. It would also have been very easy
for a naval navigator, or almost any rank
amateur, to figure out where the fleet would
be on the morning of December 7th, if they were heading east. It would not have taken
a lot of brains to figure out the best day and time of day to launch a surprise attack on
US military bases on Oahu would be early
on a Sunday morning.

The notice from Washington informing the
military people in Hawaii of the expectant
attack on the Philipines also warned them to
be on the watch for sabotage of US army air
corp aircraft by local Japanese civilians.
Because of this warning, the air corp commander ordered his people to group the aircraft close together in nice, straight lines which would be easier to protect. It didn't seem to occur to him it would also make it much easier for attacking aircraft to wipe out our air fleet. But then, why should he
have been concerned about this possibliy
when he had been informed by Washington
there would be no air attack against Oahu.

For several days our top people in Washington
were receiving reports from numerous sources
from around the world, from Britain, Australian
and New Zealand governments, from Sinapore
and from several civilian ships at sea. All these
urces were reporting picking up ship to ship
radio transmissions from Japanese war ships
along a line from Japan to a direct line north of
Oahu. Ship to ship communications normally
have a very short range. Sometimes the
atmospheric conditions can be just right so
this type of communication can be carried
for very long distances.

All the information I have listed up to this
point have been reported in numerous articles in the World War II, American Heritage and Readers Digest magazines, numerous documentaries on the History channel, the Discovery channel and even an ABC documentary.

Part III, President Roosevelt's Options

As I noted in yesterday's posting,
President Roosevelt had several options
to try and force Germany to declare war
against this county.


Great Britain was placing very large orders of food, oil, raw materials and war productsfrom this country but German U boats were sinking large numbers of the ships hauling this material to the British Isles.


To help Great Britain counter this German effort to stop the flow of goods from the United States and Canada, President Roosevelt issued two orders. One was to turn over 50 WWI destroyers to Britain.


The other was to order our destroyers to escort the British convoys as far as
Greenland. He knew Germany would find these moves provocative but I have no doubt he welcomed that attitude. Germany might even feel provoked enough to declare war against the United States. During this period several of our destroyers were torpedoed and one and one was sunk, resulting in the loss of many American naval personnel. But Germany did not feel provoked enough to declare war
against this country.


Roosevelt's other option was to attempt to take advantage of the axis agreement in which, if one of the three members of the axis
agreement was attacked or if war was dedeclared against that country, the other two countries would declare war against the country which had
attacked or declared war against their
axis partner.


Since it was Germany President Roosevelt was trying to force into declaring against us, Japan seemed the logical country to try and
provoke into attacking this country. It wouldn't be enough to provoke a minor attack. It had to be a devastating attack which would turn the people in the United States toward revenge.


How to do this?
The first action President took was to order a stop to the shipment of all scrap metal and oil from this country to Japan. The second was to order an embargo of oil and raw materials from any source to Japan.
These actions were enough to be greatly
provocative. The Japanese were very dependent on these sources of of raw materials. They were sure to try and obtain their own
sourcesthrough conquests. But the president and his advisors felt these
measures might not be enough to provoke
Japn into attacking us.

To further provoke the Japanese further,
President Roosevelt ordered two small
civilian boats, one a sail boat and the other
an old yacht which the United States had
taken possession of, to be commissioned and outfitted for a mission. These two boats were to be manned by US Navy sailors. The crews were given orders to sail into the
waters close to Japanese ports in the
south Pacific to spy on the ports and
issue reports back to Hawaii by radio.
The hope was this act would provoke
the Japanese government enough to
cause them to declare war against the
United States. We would then
reciprocate by declaring war against
Japan. Germany would then declare
war agains us.


The president and his people were well
aware these orders would result in suicide missions for the crews of the two
boats. In fact, the naval people in Hawaii
and the members of the crew were also
aware they were being sent on a suicide
mission. Both boats set sail around the
first part of December but were recalled
very shortly after setting sail when the
top people in Washington realized the
missions would be unnecessary. By this
time they were aware the main Japanese
fleet had set sail from their home ports and were rendezvouing for their big mission.


The Roosevelt administration was getting
reports from a numerous sources Japan
was going to launch a surprise attack
against the United States . At first they
did not know where but this was to
change over the next several days because of
reports coming in from various places which
were to confirm what direction the Japanese
fleet was sailing.

Part II, Events Leading Up to Pearl Harbor

Today I am going to talk about some
of the events leading up to Pearl
Harbor. None of the events which
took place on Pearl Harbor day,
December 7th, 1941 and the following
days without knowing what led up
to those days.

On September 1, 1939 Hitler's troops
marched into Poland. Two days later
Great Britain declared war on Germany.
Poland was conquered within a few
weeks. In the spring of 1940 German
troops attacked Denmark and Norway, followed by the invasion of Holland, Belgium, and France. Within a few
weeks all these countries were defeated
and occupied by German forces.

Hitler then directed his attention on
defeating Great Britain, starting with
an all out bombing effort, first against
her shipping and air fields, then switching
to civilian targets.

In the fall of 1940, Germany, Italian
and Japan signed an agreement in which
each agreed if any one of the three were
attacked or war declared against them
by any country, the other two would declare war against that country.

In the spring of 1941 Italy and Germany
attacked and conquered Greece. British
forces were being soundly defeated in
North Africa by the German and Italian
military forces.

Then, in June, Germany attacked the
Soviet Union and scored one great victory
after anther against this new foe. By
late summer it appeared the Soviet Union
would not last into the winter.

By the spring of 1941 the situation looked
very bad for Great Britain. Winston
Churchill, British prime minister since the
preceding summer, knew Great Britain
didn't stand much of a chance for survival
without the help of the United States. He
began badgering President Roosevelt to
declare war on Germany. At that time the
United States was ill prepared for getting
directly involved in a war. In addition to
having a poorly trained, poorly equipped
army and air corp, and an inadequate the population of the United States was dead
set against our getting invloved in a
European war. Polls continually showed an 80 t0 85 per cent opposition to our getting into the war.

President Roosevelt knew, if he pressured
Congress to declare war against Germany,
he probably would not survive his current
term of presidency. What was he to do?
He was well aware if he left Churchill, and
Great Britain, to fight Germany and Italy
by themselves, they would soon be defeated.

This would leave Germany free to march into
the middle east oil countries, on down into
Africa and would be able to conquer the entire
continent in very little time.

Also they would be free to turn east from the
middle east and conquer India, and then link
up with Japanese forces in the south Pacific.

The defeat of Australia and New Zealand

would soon follow.

Once Africa was under Germany's control, they
would more than likely move across the Atlantic
and conquer those countries of South America

which were not Axis supporters.

From there it would be a simple matter to move
north and attack first, Central America and then
United States and Canada. With the resources
of most of the world behind them, it was most
likely the axis forces, Germany, Italy and Japan,
would have very little trouble defeating both
the United States and Canadaand would then

control the entire world. This was not a far

fetched idea. President Roosevelt and his

advisors were well aware it could quite

easily happen.

With this type of reasoning, it was not hard for
President Roosevelt, and his advisors, to
conclude the only way out of this delima was
to get Germany to declare war again the United
States. How to do this? In tomorrow's posting
I will explore the options available to the
President.

Pearl Harbor, facts and fiction, Part I

Starting today, and for the next several
days, I am going to write about all the
myths surrounding 'The Surpise Attack
on Pearl Harbor'.

I grew up in a household during the
1930's and 40's which believed President
Roosevelt walked on water. All our
sources for news were from liberal sources
so we took everything we were fed by
the Roosevelt administration as the
gospel. This was true of much of the
nation.

First of all, I am going to say flat out,
the attack on Pearl Harbor was not a
surprise attack to the Washington
top administration and military
personal, including President Roosevelt.

Over the past 20 years or so, there have
been a great many articles in various
magazines and TV documentaries
pointing out all the proof showing these
people were well aware of the pending
attack.

Tomorrow I am going to go into the
reasons why the top administration
people were keeping their knowledge
a secret, especially to those who would
have benefited the most by revealing
their knowledge of the pending attack,
the people of Hawaii, the crews on
board the various capital ships and the
air corp ground personal. The top brass
of both the navy and the air corp would
have benefited the most with this
knowledge but it was kept from them
for a very important reason. Over the
next few days I will go into these, along
with all the information the top Washington
people had, which would have had the
affect of preventing the attack and wiping
out the Japanese fleet if it had been
indulged to the right people.

This town has very little in the way
of industry or shopping and is
primarily a bedroom town for workers
in Rapid City and Custer State Park.

This summer the east side of Hermosa
experienced a horrible flood. A large
number of relatively new homes built
on the flood plain were either destroyed
or badly damaged.
A side note: Another name or designation
for a flood plain is a Secondary River Bed.
That is what a flood plain is. Why in the
world people would build on a flood plain
is beyond me. Now these same people are
in the process of restoring or rebuilding
their homes, still in the flood plain
(secondary river bed). I guess they are
assuming since it just flooded there, the
next flood won't happen for a long time.
Floods are designated by how often that
type of flood occurs. There are what are
referred to as fifty year floods, one hundred
year floods, five hundred year floods, one
thousand year floods. Many people
apparently take this to mean, on a one
hundred year flood, after one occurs, there
won't be another one for one hundred
years. Unfortunately, they are wrong.
You can have two one hundred year flood storms back to back. What a 100 year
flood storm means is, over a 100,000
year period you can expect there will be 1000 floods of that strength.

Hamlets of the Central Black Hills

To make sense of some of my daily
postings, I urge you to began reading
my daily postings by scrolling down
to daily 'Blog Archives' and read my
first posting, followed by my
second, third, fourth and so forth.

There are several hamlets in west
central Black Hills of South Dakota.
These are Silver City, Rochford,
Iron Creek Lake, Cheyenne Crossing,
Savoy, Deerfield, and Mystic.
The largest of these is Silver City
and Rochford but even these do not
have populations large enough to
be shown on road maps.
Nearly all of these hamlets were at
one time mining communities, some
with booming populations. Some,
such as Savoy, Cheyenne Crossing,
Iron Creek Lake, and Deerfield have
campgrounds; Savoy, Cheyenne
Crossing have both motels and a
cafe or restaurant. Although all are
located in beautiful areas, there is
little else these communities have to
offer. Most have wonderful hiking
and cross country skiing trails and
some have ATV trails.

Town of Keystone

To better understand many of my daily

Today's posting is about the town of
Keystone, located a few miles from Mt.
Rushmore. It is south west of Rapid
City about 60 miles.
Keystone is an old mining town. Today
there is no mining of minerals but
plenty of mining of the tourist dollar.
It is very definitely a tourist town,
banking on it's close proximity to
Mt. Rushmore.
The town is full of souvenir shops,
fine restaurants and motels. To really
appreciate Keystone, you really must
visit the old part of town. It has a
old school building turned into a
museum.
Keystone has a population of a little
over 300 people.

Another town in the Central Black Hills

To make any sense of my daily postings

Today's central Black Hills town I am going
to write about is Hill City.
This happens to be my favorite town in the
Black Hills. I am not the only one who
feels that way. A few years ago a national
magazine selected Hill City as one of the
ten top best little unknown towns in the
country.
Hill City has a population of not quite
800 people. It is a former mining town
and is now a favorite of tourists to the
Black Hills. It has neat shops, very nice
people, wonderful eating places, the home
of the famous Alpine Inn which offers out
of this world German food, and numerous
motels.
It has a dinosaurs museum which is a must
to see. Another main attraction is the 1880
train which headquarters in Hill City and
makes several daily runs during the tourist season between Hill City and Keystone on tracks running through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills.

Today I will start with the hamlet of
Johnson's Siding. This hamlet is very
tiny. It is located on highway 44 a
dozen or so miles west of Rapid City.
With one motel, one restaurant, a
church and a town hall plus a few
residents, there is not very much more
which can be said about the hamlet
other than Rapid Creek runs through

Rapid City, South Dakota

The city of Rapid City, South Dakota is
located 27 miles south south east of
the town of Sturgis. It straddles
Interstate 90 with a population of about
60,000 people.
Rapid City has much to offer in the way
of shopping, industry, tourism, jobs,
medical care, recreation and a great place to live.
I have received a great deal of medical
care at the Mayo Clinic and I compare
the medical care and facilities in Rapid
City very favorably with the Mayo Clinic.
I might even say, in some ways, I have
received much better medical care in
Rapid City.

Elsworth Air Force Base is located just
east of Rapid City. The relationship
between the base people and Rapid City
can only be described as suburb.

The city has several colleges, including
the Black Hills School of Mines and
Technology.

Towns along the east side of the Black Hills

For the next few days I am going to write
about the towns and cities along the east
side of the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Sturgis is located on the north east corner
of the Black Hills. I have already written
about this town; scroll to an earlier posting.

There are a string of settlements along the
east side of I-90 between Sturgis and Rapid
City.

The closest town on the west side of the
Interstate and south of Sturgis is Piedmont.
Piedmont only recently voted to become an
organized town. Located approximately half
way between Sturgis and Rapid City it is
primarily a bedroom town but does has some
businesses. It is a small town of a few hundred people.

Just beyond Piedmont is the new town of
Summerset with a population of a couple of
thousand people. Summerset is a recently
organized town with scattered businesses.
The town straddles I-90 and is quite a new
settlement.

Almost adjoining Sumerset and located
southwest of I-90 is the unorganized town
of Black Hawk with a population of about
2450 people.
Black Hawk also has some businesses but,
like Summerset and Piedmont, it is primarily a bedroom town.

None of these towns is oriented toward attracting
tourists, other than a few campgrounds, motels and RV dealers.

I am perturbed by the number of
professional people using the word
'bug' when they are referring to an

The town of Whitewood, South Dakota

Midway between the towns of Sturgis and Spearfish, South Dakota lies the small town of Whitewood. It is situated astride Interstate 90 highway. With a population of less than a thousand people, it has very little in
the way of shopping but has a timber
industry as well as a livestock feed
plant.

Being only eight miles west of Sturgis,
it is able to take advantage of the

Engine or Motor?

Today I am switching directions to talk
about two words which are mistakenly
used interchangeably.
Those words are engine and motor.
I will start out by telling you a short
true story.
In May of 1952 about three dozen of us
newly out of basic training airman reported
for duty at Sheppard Air Force Base next
to Rome, New York.
Most of us were assigned to a radar calibration
squadron as B-29 mechanics. But before we
could call ourselves mechanics, it was necessary
for us to undergo considerable training.
This training started out by our sitting through
a couple of weeks of classroom instruction conducted a master sergeant.

The very first day he started his lecture by asking
us how many motors a B-29 airplane had. We had
just walked be a b-29 on our way into the classroom
so everyone thought they knew the answer. After
all, we could count.
We all raised our hands and one airman was picked
to provide the answer. He said "Four!".
"Wrong!" announced the MS.. A b-29 has 105 motors.
He then asked "How many engines does a B-29 have?"
There weren't as many hands raised this time as we
were wary of what was apparently a trick question.
A few did raise their hand and he selected one for the
answer. "Four" that person said, hesitantly. "Again,
wrong" the MS said. "A b-29 has five engines. It has
four engines to turn the big propellers. It has has an
engine in the rear of the plane to turn the auxillary
generator."
He then asked " can anyone tell me the difference
between an engine and a motor"?
This time no one wanted to sound like a fool and
venture an answer. So he answered his own question.

"An engine creates it's own energy" he said.
Gasoline, deisel, turbine and steam engines are
primary examples of this. You see one of these on
almost all trucks, cars, airplanes, ships, tractors and motorcycles.
In contrast, a motor gets it's energy from some
outside source. Examples of a motor are
electrical motors, windmills, water powered
motors and some turbines which get their
energy from somewhere else." With that he
conclude that day's lecture.
This little lecture has stuck with me for the past
56 plus years. I am still bothered when someone,
especially trained mechanics, who says motor
when they are talking about an engine. It makes
me wonder about their mechanical training.

Spearfish, South Dakota

Today I am going to talk a litte about the
town of Spearsfish, South Dakota.
This town is located on Intersate 9 about
18 miles west of Sturgis.

It was settled about 130 years ago and
has reached a population of over 10,000
people.
For a small city, Spearfish has excellent
shopping as well as medical care. It is also
noted as a tourist town. It has been the
home of the Passion Play for a great many
generations, but may not have that
attraction too many more years as the
property is for sale.
Spearfish is noted for the large number of
retired farmers and ranchers who move to
that town to retire.
It has some excellent eating places, as well
as motels and hotels. It is the home for
the Black Hills State University.

Comparing misdeeds of two presidents

Today I am going to talk about the misdeeds, crimes
if you will, of two presidents, one a Republican and
the other a Democrat.

First lets talk about the misdeeds of President
Nixon.

What were Nixon's two crimes, so hideous the
Democrats were ready to hang him from the
highest tree?

His first crime: he lied as to when he first
found out about the break in at the Watergate
hotel complex. He lied to the American public
by telling them he didn't find out about
the breakin until two weeks after it took
place. It turns out he was told about it one
week after it took place .
His other misdeed or crime. The Saturday
night massacre in which he fired the
special prosecutor appointed to investigate
the Watergate break in, and also the attorney
general who had made the appointment.

Now let's take a look at the misdeeds, or
crimes if you will, of the Democratic
president, Bill Clinton.

He was guilty also of lying to the American
public, on several ocasions, concerning
his involvement with sex scandals in the
Oval office of the Whitehouse. But he was
also guilty of lying, not just once but twice,
under oath. This is a far more serious
offense (crime) than lying to the American
public. Unfortunately, the Democrats in
the Senate saw this as not being a crime
and chose to forgive him.

His other offense. He also obstructed
justice, the first time while he was
governor of Arkansas and later after
he became president.

Bill and Hillary Clinton were heavily
involved in the Whitewater bank and
real estate scandal. Twenty six of their
closest friends and associates were
charged with crimes connected with this
scandal. All were found guilty and
sentenced to various lengths of prision
terms.
A special state investigator was appointed to
determine the involvement of the Clinton's
in this affair. Two days before the
investigator was scheduled to give his
report, Governor Bill Clinton fired him
and appointed his own investigator.
A couple of days after the appointment the
new investigator held a news conference
during which he announced he found no
fault on the part of the Clintons in the
Whitewater affair and was dropping the
investigation.

Since a bank which was insured by the
Federal government was involved, a
Federal investigator was appointed to
look into the Whitewater affair. Again,
a couple of days before this federal
investigator was scheduled to announce
his findings, the newly elected President
Clinton fired him and appointed his own
investigator. A couple days later this
newly appointed investigator announced
he found no fault in the Clinton's involvement
and was dropping the case.

Now I ask you, which of the two presidents
committed the more serious set of crimes?

No charges were ever brought against Clinton,
nither for the Arkansas coverup nor the
federal level coverup in connection with the
Whitewater scandal or it's coverup. In fact, there was very little attention paid to either
coverup in the mational news media.

So much for fairness in the national news
coverage.

Another proper English lesson

Today's lesson is such a no brainer, I am hesitant
to even mention it. The reason I am, I just left an
advertising website in which the writer said "Me and George just came upwith an idea".
There are two things wrong with this statement.
First, using "Me and George". Personal pronouns
such as I and we are of the same usage whether
standing alone or in conjunction with someone
else. Example "Me just came up with an idea".

It doesn't take a lot of brains to realize this is
wrong. Of course, it should read, "I came up with
this idea".

The second thing wrong was putting 'Me' (I)
before the other person. It should, of course,
read, "George and I came up with this idea",
not "Me and George" or George and me".

Sequence of daily postings

It seems to me blogspot has it daily postings

posted showing first. I realize it makes
sense in some ways but many daily postings
are a followup of was written on previous

write daily blogs so they make coherent
sense. How can a person write on a subject
over a several day period, with one day's
blog leading up to the next day's, when it
will be read in reverse order. I haven't
yet figured out a good way of doing that.

The town of Belle Fourche, South Dakota

On those days when I can't think of anything
else to write about, I will continue to write
about towns in the norther part of the Black
Hills of South Dakota.
Today I am going to write about Belle Fourche.
This two of about 3000 is located about ten
miles north of Spearfish and I90. It is
primarily a shopping town for a huge area
north and east of Belle Fourche. This area
is composed of huge sheep and cattle ranches,
and includes a good sized Bureau of Reclamation
irrigation project as well as numous dry land
farmers.
It is also the nearest town to several bennite
plants and several small manufacturing plants.

Belle Fourche calls its self the center of the
nation, when Alaska is thrown in. The actual
center is several miles north of Belle Fourche.

Back in the early 1900's, Belle Fourche was the
largest cattle and sheep market in the world
with more of both shipped out to slaughter
houses than any where else. Today it is one
of the largest wool markets in the world.

Speech which brought about a war

In April, 1950, Harry Truman gave a speech in which he
announce the names of those countries which we would
go to war to protect them from an invasion by a
communist country.

The list was very long, encompassing nearly half the
world.

Conspicuous by it's absence from that list was the country
of South Korea.

North Korea had been building up a massive war machine
for the purpose of some day conquering South Korea.

President Truman's speech amounted to an open invitation
to the North Korean leaders to go ahead and launch their
invasion. President Truman's speech assured them the United would do nothing to stop them.

Toward the end of June, 1950, North Korea launched their
invasion. A few days later President Truman had a change
of heart and called on the United Nations to put a stop to
the North Korean invasion. The United States became the
major country to assist the United Nations in this effort.

Question: Would North Korea have invaded South Korea
if President Truman had not made his protection speech?
No doubt at some point they would have seen an opportunity
open up for them to do just that but it is extremely doubtful
they would have launched their invasion when the did, if
they had not been assured the United States would not
oppose them.

I have to personally thank President Truman for his speech. Without it I would not have gone into the Air Force a few months later and would not have met my wife Annie. My three children, my four grandchildren and my great grandchild would not have been born so I have many reasons to

be thankful for his blunder.

Lead and Central City, South Dakota

Today I am going to write a little about the town
of Lead (pronounced Leed), South Dakota.
The town is located 18 miles south west of the
town of Sturgis and 4 miles from Deadwood. It was the home of the Homestake Gold Mine for more than 100 years and gets it's name from the word lead, which is another way of
saying ore vein.

Lead has a population of approximately
3000 people. After the Homestake Gold Mine
closed a few years ago, the town went into an
economic slump for a couple of years but is now starting to thrive again as tourists find the town and it's attractions which include two
nearby downhill ski slopes, miles and miles of
snow mobile, cross country skiing and hiking
trails.

The National Science Foundation recently
selected the Homestake Mine as the location
of it's planned deep underground science lab.
If and when it is established it will be at a
depth of nearly 8000 feet, the deepest of any
underground lab in the world.
To complement the 8000 foot NSF lab, the
state of South Dakota is in the process of developing a lab at the 4850 foot level for
those institutions and scientists who wish to
run experiments which don't require a location
any deeper than that.

Lead is located in a high valley and the slopes
on either side of the Valley. It has a recently
renovated opera house to bring back the opera glory days of 100 years ago. It also has a very
interesting gold mining museum, fine restaurants
and hotels.

The tiny hamlet of Central City is located 3 miles
from Deadwood and one mile from Lead. It has
a population of around 100 people. There isn't
a lot to say about Central City except it exists.

I recently read a book written by Ronald Kessler.
Mr. Kessler is a highly respected newspaper
reporter and author for the New York Times.
He is one of their best selling authors and has
won sixteen journalism awards

Deadwood, South Dakota

Today I am going to write a little about the
town of Deadwood, South Dakota, USA.

Deadwood is located 12 miles west southwest
of Sturgis. It is the second oldest town in the
Black Hills, being first settled about 1875 by
goldminers after gold was discovered near
the town site.

In the early days Deadwood was one of the
roughest, toughest communities in the United
State. Gun fights were a daily occurance as
miners attempted to defend their claims or
settle a gambling dispute. There were quite
a large number of prostitues and even these
ladies were not immune to the violence. At
least one was murdered by a jealous customer.

For the past twenty years Deadwood has been
the only authorized gambling town in South
Dakota. It has more than 100 casinios and a
very large number of hotel and motel rooms
as well as numberous, very reasonable
resturants and cafes.

Deadwood is still a small town, despite the
huge number of tourists drawn to it's many
attractions, with a population of around 2000.

US Army Band

I said yesterday I was going to write about
the town of Deadwood today. Instead I am
going to say a few words about the US
Army band (I believe it is called the US Army
Field Band).
This band put on a fabulous two hour
program yesterday at the Rapid City
Civic Center.
To put it mildly, they were fantastic. They
played a wide range of tunes from marching
music to broadway hits. They had several
singing groups and singing soloists. In
all, I would say the performance of the
entire group bordered on perfection. Makes
one proud of our Army.
If this military band, or any of the other
national military bands are scheduled to
play in your area, I urge you to call for
tickets and go. The tickets are free. I am quite certain you will not be sorry.

One point of interest: Toward the end of
the program they played each of the military
branch's tune and asked all those who had
served in that branch to stand up while the
tune was being played. The total number
standing during one or another of the tunes
must have been about half the large
audience. If one adds in their spouses, I
would say most of those attending were
either veterans or spouses of veterans.

If you are not either, don't let that stop you
from enjoying a tremendous evenig of
music.

Black Hills Tourist Attractions

I will be writing about the different Black Hills
tourist attractions at various times.
Today I will write about the attractions in the
northern part of the Black Hills.
There are five (six) towns in the northern part
of the Black Hills. The five are Sturgis, Deadwood,
Lead, Whitewood and Spearfish. Even though
Belle Fourche is a few miles north of the Black
Hills, I have chosen to include it in the northern
Black Hills town lineup, which makes the number
of northern hills towns six.

I will start with Sturgis, since it is my home town
and is located in the complete north east corner
of the Hills.
Sturgis started on it's way to becoming a town
around 125 years ago with the establishment
of a Army fort to protect the north part of the
hills from the indians. The Fort was called Fort Meade.
Sturgis is located on the Interstate 90 highway
and is about 27 miles from Rapid City, 20 miles
from Spearfish, 12 miles from Deadwood, 18
miles from Lead, 10 miles from Whitewood
and 27 miles from Belle Fourche.

Because of it's easy location to these towns
and cities, Sturgis has become somewhat of
a bedroom town. Fort Meade VA Medical
Center is locate about a mile east of Sturgis.
Sturgis has a population of approximately
seven thousand people. Sturgis is the shopping
center for the ranchers and farmers from a
vast area to the east of town. It is also a
tourist town of some note.

Once a year Sturgis hosts a huge five day
motor cycle rally. It goes by two names,
Sturgis Motor Cycle Rally and The Black
Hills Motor Cycle Rally. For the past ten
years the attendance has ranged from a
high or nearly three quarters of a million
bikers to a low of 450,000. Of course,
these bikers are spread out over the entire
Black Hills region during the weeks leading
up to the rally, during the rally and for about
a week affter the rally. The rally takes place
each year approximately the first week in
August. Officially it starts on a Monday and
ends on a Saturday. Unofficially it runs for
at least a week earlier than that and continues
on for nearly a week after the official event.
At any one time there is probably no more
than 100,000 bikers in the town of Sturgis
its self. The rest are spread out thoughout
the Black Hills region.

You might think, with that number of bikers
every year, there would be a great deal of
serious problems in Sturgis during that
period. Such is not the case. Of course
there are some problems but not what you
would expect. In the first place, the vast
majority of the people who show up look
very raunchy, heavily bearded and uncouth.
This is a front, in most cases. These are
mostly your every day, next door neighbor
kind of people. They start letting their
beards grow two or three months before
the rally and put on rough looking
clothing, all so they will look the part
everyone expects a rally biker to look.
The eye awakener is when one of them
hold the bank door open for you. Then
you realize all is not as it seems.

One somewhat unpleasant side affect
of the rally; the noise level can reach
almost unbearable levels. And, of course,
the traffic within the town can be quite
impossible. It is not unusual for a biker,
or a motorist, to take an hour to drive
approximately one mile from either
I-90 exit to downtown Sturgis. Then
comes the serious problem of trying to
find some place to park.

Sturgis is developing a reputation as a
small arms manufacturing town.
There are a number of small arms
and ammunition manufacturers in Sturgis. For eleven months of the year, Sturgis
is a quite, well behaved and might be
considered a religious town.
At last count it had 27 churches but
also has quite a lot of bars. it does not
have much in the way of regular shopping.
That is no big problem for people
living in Sturgis since it is such a short
distance to very good shopping in
Rapid City and Spearfish.

My wife and I have lived in Sturgis for
the past 28 years. We have lived all
over South Dakota and the United
States but we love living in Sturgis
by far the most of any place we've
lived.

Weapons of Mass Destruction

Over the past several years we have been
continuously bombarded by liberal
editorialists, liberal news persons,
liberal politicians and liberal writers to
the editor, as well as liberal editorial
cartoonists about how President Bush
lied to us about Iraq having weapons of
mass destruction.
I would like you to consider these points.

First: Leading up to our invasion of
Iraq, the intelligence agencies of all the
major countries of the world were
reporting that fact to be so.

Second: Fox News ran exerpts of three speeches former president Bill Clinton
made in 1998 and 1999 in which he said "Sudam's weapons of mass
destruction pose a threat to the entire
to the entire world."

Third: Fox News ran portions of
interviews and speechs former Senate
majority leader of the Democratically
controlled Senate, Tom Daschle, made
in the year 2000 in which he repeated
Bill Clinton's statements, using the
exact same words.

Fourth: Fox News ran portions of
speechs made by all the top Democratic
leaders during the years 1998, 1999 and
2000 in which each of them said almost
identically the same words both Bill Clinton
and Tom Daschel used over and over again
during those years.

Fifth: A few days after the last presidential
election, Hillary Clinton said "I still think
Sudam Hussain had weapons of mass
destruction".

Were all these liberal democratics lying to
us too? What happened between the time
all those liberals held the viewpoint
Sudam Hussain had weapons of mass
destruction and a few years later which caused
all of these people to change their mind?

One other point: Last spring Fox News ran
a portion of an interview with a former top
general in Sudam's military. This general
said right after our forces crossed the
border into Iraq, Sudam issued an order for
all Iraq's weapons of mass destruction be
moved across the border into Syria. Was he
lying too?

Nearly half of Iraq is desert with constantly
shifting sand dunes. How easy it would have
been for all their weapons of mass destruction
be taken out in the vast desert wasteland and
buried deep in the sand. If you will recall,
there was a very bad sand storm a couple of
days after our invasion was launched. That
sand storm would have erased any sign of
anything having been buried out there.

Another point to consider. Suppose President
Bush was right and those weapons of mass
destruction are either in Syria or buried in
the Iraqi desert. If that is the case, isn't it
probable, those WMD will start showing up
in various places around the world, including
the United States, and used by terrorists to
kill thousand of people. Suppose some of
those thousands are your friends or relatives, or even you? It It seems to me it is better for
the United States, and the world, to err on
the side of safety. What do you think?

My Third novel

I will finish out this week by writing a little
about my third novel.

The setting is in the midwest farm belt.
The time, from the middle thirties to
early 1940's.
The tentative title of this novel is:
The Caretaker
After his parents both die, this young man
heads south to the southern part of another
state where his Aunt and Uncle live. He
hitch hikes when he can and walks when
he can't find a ride.
On the way, he is sidetracked by a storm
which forces him to find shelter in an
empty farmstead. The farm was
abandoned unintentionally a few years
earlier when the owners were killed while
on their way to a funeral in another state.

Since there is canned food in the celler,
a roof over his head, both a heating and a
cook stove and the house is fully furnished,
he decides to stay there a few days
before continuing his journey.
The few days stretch into a lifetime as
he works out a way to stay on the farm,
first as a caretaker, then as a share crop
farmer and then as the owner of the
farm.
As he intregates himself into the community,
he becomes a progressive community leader,
helping to bring electricity and a rural
telephone servce to the community.
This is also a story of romance as he meets,
woos and then marries a young woman from
a very similar background.

A little about my second novel

I am hitting a blank on what to write
about so will say a few words about my
second novel. Like the other two novels,
I have never submitted it for publication. In fact, it still needs some editing done on it.
The story is about a young man who has
been selected to be a guidian and watch
over six beautiful young homemakers on
a world tour for a flour company.

While on their way to Australia, the
plane they are on crashes into the Pacific.
The crew members on the plane all killed
in the crash, leaving the six girls and the
young man as the only survivors.

The story is about their survival, with
considerable romance and adventure
thrown in. I didn't set out to do so, but after I was finished with the rough draft,
I realized some might think I was trying
to copy "Gilligan's Island". For now my
story is called "Our Island Paradise".
No doubt that title has already been taken.
