Off and on I am going to make comments about how some people slaughter the English language.
Today I am going to talk about the personal pronoun to use as the object of preposition 'to'.
How often have you heard someone, even a college graduate or someone who makes their living with words, say something like "he gave Tom and I a new telephone".
One way to test to see if that is proper useage is to drop off the other person and see if it sounds right. Example:
"he gave I a new telephone". It is easy to see that is not correct. Hint:the preposition 'to' is not seen but is assumed to be there; example: he gave 'to' Tom and me a new telephone. By assuming the 'to' is there, the correct way to say it is "he gave Tom and me a new telephone". **End of English lesson**
